This file contains more recent transcriptions, from Ceri
Matthews, Kevin Gow, Keith Davies Jones, (notes and translation on Land of My Fathers) and
myself. Sources include Nicholas Bennett's Alawon fy Ngwlad (1896), Davidson's Musical Miracles, Owain Alaw's Gems of Welsh Melody, and photocopies of original
manuscript sent to Ceri by Cass Meurig (who is doing her PhD on Welsh fiddle styles of the
eighteenth century), including the "Ifor Ceri" manuscripts. Particularly for the transcriptions done (separately) by
Ceri and myself, these are just how each of us are playing them today, but maybe not
tomorrow. Please don't consider these settings of the tunes to be the only way to play
them. Thank you to every one who has helped.

*A note about the
classification or naming of rhythms of traditional tunes, from Ceri Matthews:
Its all to do with fashion. The names given to the rhythms reflect
the era. A jig in England and Wales could
mean ANY dance tune originally, and although coming from the Italian, had actually nothing
to do with a gigue. 4/4, 2/4, 3/2, 6/8, 9/8 - all jigs!
Then Scottish reels became fashionable or hornpipes (3/2 originally) - but
not in that order! So it was all about how musicians marketed themselves to
customers.
Dance time titles - some are names I had to coin as there was no name for them. They are just dances of course.

H:Bedd means "grave" and it was after some
H:posting by some N american poet type _ Keoth I think - that the
H:idea sort of bore itself of composing a tune in honour of the death
H:of RS THomas, and Piotrv Gwliium made some kind of grammatical
H:mistake which implied that RS thomas was sharing a grave with
H:someone ie Anachreon - a jolly anarchic greek type. Anyway we has a
H:bit of fun at his - William Peterson - expense but came up with
H:a genuine tune which as it happens is a bludy good Ridee if you are
H:into these things.
H: It's a Ridee 6. It rambles between the
H:aeolian and ionian mode but resolves as the gay bard
H:would appreciate in the major key. the extra bar is on
H:purpose and typical and makes dancers feel funny in all
H:the right places. it is flutey.
N:If any of you have the fernhill record with Ridees Pastwn mawr on it
N:then that's the musical pattern and rhythm I'm trying to get here in
N:writing. Also, all the other ways of playing the tune are
N:left out like in the first bar of the "B" part you can obviously go
N:GAB GAB.

H:The pseudo G lydian, with a Bb, is one of the old Welsh pipe tunings -
H:drone on G, . I'm not sure if it is technically G lydian which would have
H:a natural B of course, but it's definately the tuning of the pibgorn (a

H:instrument - a bagpipe if you like) that I played at the museum of folk
life.
H:In Welsh, it's one of the ancient tunings and is called "Y Gogywair". ie a

H:Gwlad certainly means 'land', but in the context of the anthem it means
H:'our land' ie Wales, and 'yr hen wlad' means 'the old country' ie 'home'.
H:The proper translation is as follows:
H:The old land (home) of my fathers is dear to me,
H:Land of poets and singers, great ones of renown.
H:Her brave warriors, finest patriots,
H:For freedom they lost (shed) their blood.
H:Land! Land! (Wales!) - partial am I to my Land.
H:As long as the sea is a wall to the pure beloved country
H:O may the old language (Y Gymraeg) endure.
N: Words by Evan James, but it's unclear whether this was the father
N: or the brother of the tune's composer. (Both had the same name).
